The Writing for New Media Experience
Are you an aspiring content creator? Dreaming of going into the media industry? Hello, my name is James and I am an aspiring content creator too and in this blog, I will share you my own experience with the course Writing for New Media!
As the time goes by, general media has changed a lot. From newspapers to radios, radios to televisions, and televisions to social media. Much have changed for the platforms and even so for the contents of new media itself. In this day and age, the demand for CONTENT CREATION have skyrocketed and more people are creating contents for social media. So what did even learned in this course? *spoilers: a lot*
What I Learned so Far?
As a creative, and aspiring content creator, this course is really what i looked forward to. What makes a "hooking" content, how to understand your audience, how to write catchy statements and stories for your content, and understanding the cyberlaw & internet etiquettes. Those are the things every content creator should know and fortunately, this course covers it all. At first, we covered the different content platforms of new media. Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Wordpress, and you guessed it right, including Blogger. The best part was that we got the chance to create our own account and blog about whatever we want. As for me, I created a blog talking about my favorite movies. I think blogging is a good preparatory project for creators if they wanna pursue writing in the future.
Viral Content Creation
This is probably my favorite project that we did in this course. I think it is a good project for several reasons. One of them is that it brings out the creativity in everyone. Second, it lets us actually THINK for a topic that might go viral. As content creators, it is important to filter what ideas are actually good and what ideas are bad, and this activity let us be better at content creation. Third, at the end of the activity. We got feedbacks and criticism from our Professor and audience, which I think is the best part of the project. Feedback allows us to grow and be better at the next content we're gonna make. Now, you'll see how we took these feedbacks and apply it to our next project.
Audience Analysis and Podcast Creation
In the previous project, it is obvious from the feedback that our audience did not enjoy our content very much. It is because of several reasons. No clear target audience, not attention grabbing, too long of a content, etc. We took these feedbacks into consideration but one of the most important lessons in content creation that we learned is doing AUDIENCE ANALYSIS. Who is your audience? What is their age, what do they look like, what kind of life they have? Those are important questions that we need to know our audience, and therefore make better content.
For the theme of our next project, we get to be podcast content creators and the challenge is to create a podcast that will best suit our audience's preference. This is where we will see if we really learned from our mistakes from the viral content creation project. Thankfully, our group's output was decent and I can say that we really listened to what our audience truly wants. It is truly a one step forward to becoming a content creator.
